Mauricio Claver-Carone, a figure closely linked to the President, said he was willing to collaborate with his administration to respond to the needs and challenges of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) President Mauricio Claver-Carone, a former adviser to Donald Trump in the White House, congratulated Democrat Joe Biden on Tuesday, November 10, on his victory in the US elections.
“Congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris,” Claver-Carone said in a brief statement posted on Twitter.
“The IDB Group is ready to work with your administration to respond to the needs and challenges of Latin America and the Caribbean, promote economic development and job creation, mitigate the impacts of climate change, improve governance and support rapid recovery from the effects of covid-19, “he added.
Trump has not admitted Biden’s triumph and, amidst the fraud allegations he seeks to demonstrate in court, he is blocking the transition process even though projections based on official results show that the Democrat’s advantage is insurmountable and would not change even if the requests from the Republican president were successful.
Claver-Carone, who took office October 1 after serving as the White House’s principal national security adviser in the Western Hemisphere, is the first American to be elected president of the IDB, breaking an unwritten rule that the institution it must be led by a Latin American.
His election in September, with 67% of the shareholder vote and the support of 23 of the 28 countries in the region, was seen as a Trump victory.
But it has generated criticism not only in the region – Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Peru and Trinidad and Tobago abstained from voting in favor – but also in Biden’s campaign.
Claver-Carone is a candidate “too ideological, unqualified and looking for a new job after November,” said Kevin Munoz, spokesman for Biden’s campaign, quoted by the US media.
