CCN recently published a story about AmbaCoin, an Ethereum-based cryptocurrency created by secessionist leaders in the Amazon region of southern Cameroon. As a follow-up, we met with Chris Anu, Secretary of State of the separatist movement for communications and information technology, to discuss AmbaCoin and the perspectives of cryptocurrency as a means of allowing movements of freedom and resistance throughout the world. .

CCN: The Cameroonian government recently made a prolonged closure of all internet and communication services through parts of southern Cameroon, where support for the Ambazonian cause was evident. Does AmbaCoin intend to act as a means of peer-to-peer exchange on the field in the area or does it simply function as a fundraising tool? If it will serve as a short-term currency, how will you manage to bypass the block of government communications?

Chris Anu: AmbaCoin is intended to function as a transactional currency: a peer-to-peer exchange medium, value deposit and deferred payment standard. This is what will give it its value and its market capitalization. Because it is adapted and used regularly by ambassadors, the CFA will gradually grow. It will be independent of the CFA and any government. As a result, it is not affected by the devaluation and therefore, a good choice to store the value. Ambassadors have over time found ways to bypass the Internet block using VPN services.

The use of Internet shutdown techniques to control a population will soon be a thing of the past. There are over two dozen companies that are now planning to broadcast satellite internet all over the world. SpaceX launched a pair of experimental satellites in February 2018 that are designed to transmit an ultra-fast internet connection without lagging the Earth. Microsat-2a and Microsat-2b are intended to cover the world in wireless broadband connectivity. The initial satellites in the network should be online next year.

Google Loon has partnered with Telkom Kenya Ltd. To build a network of flying balloons to connect people to the country of Eastern Africa starting next year. Signals are also expected in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2015, Facebook joined the French satellite operator Eutelsat to launch a satellite – Amos-6 – that will transmit Internet connectivity to more than 14 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. The construction has been completed and its entry into orbit by 2016, but has had some delays.

SES Networks, based in Betzdorf, Luxembourg, has 12 satellites worldwide with another four launched in 2018 and four more in order. Its fleet provides high-speed data transmission services in different locations, many of which are remote or depleted and could not afford to install the infrastructure necessary to support cable fiber. The beneficiaries include the Cook Islands, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Chad, Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, the Caribbean and many others. Sub-Saharan Africa is scheduled!

CCN: The comparison was inevitably made with the petro of Venezuela, mainly because both cryptocurrencies operate on the ERC-20 standard and are presumably supported by the potential of natural resources of the respective countries. Given that the independence movement of the Embassy still has to achieve a substantial measure of success, just as AmbaCoin will avoid the problems faced by petro such as the general lack of liquidity / availability and the lack of capacity / infrastructure to exploit. the deposits of natural resources that its value is based on?

Chris Anu: Obviously, with every vision of this magnitude, there are challenges. The success of this project is based on two main strengths of the ambassador people. The first is the resilience, determination and ingenuity of the ambassador people who allowed them; given their circumstances; survive all these years. The second is our belief in a free society in which the rule of law is respected. Despite the culture of French-Cameroonian corruption brought to Ambazonia, ambassadors believe mostly in law and freedom.

The problem that Venezuela had was its corrupt society and the absence of the rule of law and democratic institutions. We believe that with the establishment of democratic institutions such as Ambazonia and respect for the rule of law that they have tried to maintain, foreign capital will flow to solve the problem of liquidity.

CCN: Give us an exact idea of the question that exists for AmbaCoin and your projection for how successful you think it might become.

Chris Anu: Principal brokerage platform Robinhood offers cryptocurrency trading services from the start of 2018 and has continued to express its optimism for the growing demand of the encrypted market. Some of the largest banks in the world, including Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan, have revealed their ongoing efforts to serve customers interested in cryptocurrencies as an asset class.

We believe that the ambassadors are ready to demonstrate once again their patriotism by giving up the CFA in favor of AmbaCoin. We also see the adoption of the countries and countries bordering the Franc area that no longer want the CFA. There is a big demand for AmbaCoin, as our market indicators tell us!

CCN: We leave Cameroon for a minute and go across the border into Nigeria's largest African country, which currently has a secessionist movement for the Republic of Biafra. Between 1967 and 1970, a bloody civil war was fought in that country on this issue, and what is generally credited as breaking the resistance of Biafra was the economic blockade of the Nigerian government that prevented the biafranic government from taking part in international trade at any significant level.

Do you think that if the Biafran government were able to create a cryptocurrency supported by the insured state on the natural resources of the area, the result could be changed significantly? In the event of a continuing military conflict between the Cameroonian armed forces and the ambassadors loyalists, how will AmbaCoin help civilians become the greatest economic victim of the war, as was the case in Nigeria?

Chris Anu: A keen observer of the embassy situation would have already noted that there is an economic blockade of Ambazonia. The development of Ambazonia has never been a priority of the dictatorial and colonial regime of Yaoundé. That's why Ambazonia fights today. Ambazonia had an airport in the city of Tiko and Bafut, a deep seaport in Victoria, prosperous industries, but the colonizing power of Yaounde had closed them all. When they declared war on Ambazonia, they also burned their jobs in Yaounde and Douala and in cities like Bamenda.

They have implemented burnt land policies by breaking down villages, targeting people with possible economic resources and destroying all remaining economic powers and food sources. 1970 was a different environment. Today, with the restructuring of UNHCR, this body is expected to take a step forward to provide economic aid to the affected populations. In the meantime, at a certain level in case of success, the AmbaCoin project could apply a quantitative easing to help support and rebuild Ambazonia. AmbaCoin could also use the resources generated by the sale to directly provide economic support to the affected populations of Ambazonia.

CCN: On a global level, how do you think the adoption of cryptocurrency will have an impact on secession and independence movements in places like Catalonia and West Papua? In the context of these political movements, do you think the cryptocurrencies make the most decentralized power or the most fractured world?

Chris Anu: Every situation is different The criptos are not a solution for every movement of liberation and freedom. Ambazonia was a territory of trust with a UN mandate and international borders. He had a prime minister who was the head of government and a functioning parliament; has gone through three peaceful democratic transfers of power in front of any other African state. Therefore it has a national identity and as a result a currency acts as one of its national and state symbols. Ambazonia is substantially restoring its independence voted by the UN.

Catalonia, on the other hand, is one of the richest and most productive regions of Spain. Before the Spanish civil war enjoyed wide autonomy, but was suppressed by Gen Franco. Before the decision of the constitutional court of 2010, a 2006 statute had conferred even greater powers, strengthening the financial powers of Catalonia. So its realities are very different from those of Ambazonia and a cryptocurrency may not necessarily be the right tool for its search for independence.

The case of West Papua is more similar to the situation of the Embassy as their nation was handed over to another entity without their express consent. The Indonesian government is doing exactly what the colonizing government of Cameroon has done to the ambassadors – targeting the killings, the burnt policies of the land, the brutalization, the mutilation of the citizens, the imprisonment without trial, the threat of freedom of expression and etc. There is also the current geopolitical and multilateral structure among nations that impacts their struggle for freedom. Nonetheless, there is a huge role for a cryptocurrency for Western Papuans.

In the meantime, there is also good news. The struggle for the independence of West Papua is insinuating the international agenda while campaign groups, Papua leaders in exile and worried people all over the world bring to the forefront and to their leaders the injustices that are happening in Papua West. Cryptocurrency is freedom! It takes away control from centralized power and empowers people and the private sector. It is independent of the control of a centralized government structure. Cryptocurrency is the next logical step in the evolution of legal tender!
