The hope of a vaccine changes the rules of the game. Emmanuel Macron has taken the initiative in the face of French skepticism: 1 in 2 does not intend to be vaccinated. “I will not make vaccination mandatory”the head of state said, but promised that some injections will be available from the end of December or even the beginning of January.

Indeed, we will have the first vaccines within this period indicated by the President of the Republic if, and only if, the European Medicines Agency gives the green light. This is the obligatory, inevitable step. Experts from this health authority are currently examining the scientific data provided by the most advanced laboratories and could issue the first marketing authorizations by the end of the year. These authorizations are based on the efficacy and safety of candidate vaccines. It is not a question of exposing the first vaccinee to unknown risks.

It’s true that two months of hindsight may not seem like much, but the surveillance doesn’t stop there. Firstly, clinical trials on thousands of volunteers continue, in addition there will be what is called phase 4, namely very careful monitoring in real life, allowing you to observe possible side effects. However, don’t imagine that the 90 million doses pre-ordered from France will be immediately available. They will arrive in limited numbers. And there, we await the final opinion of the High Health Authority.

With regard to priority populations, i.e. perhaps the most elderly, people who can develop a severe form of the disease, but also health personnel, this represents 22 million people which, according to the HAS, could be vaccinated within three months.
